The Birmingham Language and Literacy Toolkit is made up of the Language & Literacy Continuum and corresponding Teaching and Learning ideas.

Continuums
The Language and Literacy Continuum is made up of attainment criteria based on the English Primary Curriculum. The descriptors cover attainment from Nursery to the end of Y6 expectations. This enables the tracking of progress and target setting for underachieving groups as well those pupils identified as having a Special Educational Need, who are working significantly below national expectations.

Teaching and Learning Ideas
Teaching and Learning ideas have been produced by a core group of PSS staff, in collaboration with SENCOs, additional staff from Pupil and School Support, Communication and Autism Team, Sensory Support Service and Speech and Language Therapy.
They are designed to support target setting by providing advice about suitable strategies and resources for each thread of the Language and Literacy Continuum.

What is it?
The Language and Literacy Continuum is attainment criteria forming a continuum from Nursery to end of Year 6 expectations. In this format they can be used to inform target setting and track pupil progress.
The Language and Literacy Continuum is split into 3 separate continuums for Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing. These are produced in their original form and converted to 'pupil speak' / 'I can' statements. All are A4 size for ease of printing and can be enlarged as required.

There are a total of 14 threads:

6 THREADS FOR SPEAKING AND LISTENING
1. Group Discussion and Social Interaction
2. Grammar and Sentence Building
3. Listening and Understanding
4. Verbal Storytelling and Narrative
5. Vocabulary

They are designed to support target setting by providing advice about suitable strategies and resources for each thread of the Language and Literacy Continuum. They are organised by the 14 individual threads and then by the letter bandings that correspond to the Language and Literacy Continuum.

The Speaking and Listening ideas have been compiled in close collaboration with Speech and Language Therapists.

In consultation with the Sensory Support Service (SSS), adaptations have been included that support pupils with hearing and visual impairments.

Documents are also available which outline more generic advice to underpin the Teaching and Learning Ideas for pupils with moderate visual and hearing impairment.

Versions of all continuums are available containing hyperlinks for each descriptor that when selected take you directly to the relevant Teaching and Learning Ideas page. Instructions on how to download and use these is included with the zipped files in the Resources section.

The suggestions are by no means an exhaustive list and we welcome any additional strategies / resources that are being used by schools or other professionals. If there are additional strategies you would like to recommend, please contact your PSS teacher.
